Described by many as the ‘Heart of New Orleans’, Hotel Monteleone is one of the city’s most charming historic landmarks. A locally owned hotel since its beginning, this gem of the French Quarter has been a favorite of literary monarchs, celebrities and travelers alike – Truman Capote’s mother lived in the hotel while pregnant with the author, while Faulkner and Hemingway refused to stay anywhere else each time they visited the vivacious boulevard of Royal Street.

The hotel is not only home to the infamous Carousel Piano Bar & Lounge (the only revolving bar in New Orleans), but it is also situated in the most culturally saturated part of the city. Just down the path you will come across the legendary Cornstalk Fence – a cast iron gate installed in 1856 that looks visibly out of place from the rest of the street. The fence was instated for a young bride who had been forced to leave her home in Iowa to move with her husband to New Orleans. The groom, in a bid to make her happy, thought that by planting the cornstalks she would be reminded of the fields from home, and thus she would feel less lonely.

This story is only one of the many that you will hear when visiting New Orleans – a place that has become synonymous with the term ‘moving on’ after Hurricane Katrina, where color and character run through the streets and into the veins of every person that lives and visits there.

Apply for Majestery membership today and let us create for you the most unique experience in one of the country’s most charming landmarks.

bookmania:

Suzzallo Library Reading Room, University of Washington. The Suzzallo Library, named after Henry Suzzallo, the fifteenth president of the university, opened in 1926. The architects of Suzzallo Library, Charles H. Bebb and Carl F. Gould Sr., had a vision of a campus united by design and reflecting the age-old traditions of the academy as personified by Oxford and Cambridge. Suzzallo Library was to be their centerpiece. The library embodies collegiate gothic with its soaring west facade and row of eleven 35 foot high stained glass windows and terra-cotta and cast-stone figures. When planning began in 1922, Henry Suzzallo envisioned a library that was “the soul of the university.”

A highlight of Suzzallo Library is the Reading Room. Measuring 65 feet high, 52 feet wide, and 250 feet long, the Reading Room features a vaulted ceiling elaborately decorated with richly colored and gilded stenciling. The oak bookcases are topped with a hand-carved frieze representing native plants of Washington state. The tall, traceried windows incorporate leaded glass which is intended to break the direct rays of light. Medallions representing 28 different Renaissance watermarks are worked into the design. At each end of the Reading Room there is a hand-painted world globe suspended from the ceiling, each of which bears the names of different explorers.
